Hello, sunshine

The sun is out in Vancouver and it is Glorious! It's warm and birds are chirping and the cherry blossoms are starting to bloom and everyone seems happier. I love Spring.

And Spring means Spring Cleaning, which is well underway at our place. We're tackling three of our biggest space-suckers: books, CDs and our old, rickety, student-life furniture.

As someone who loves reading and was raised by readers in a house with wall-to-wall bookshelves in every room, it's very difficult for me to donate my favorite books. And they're all my favorite. But I am slowly trying to come around to the idea of books as entertainment and information, not decorations, and begin to let them go.

CDs are pretty obvious - we need to upload the songs, make one or two massive back-up discs and get those plastic cases OUT of the house.

Furniture is tricky, because we are planning on moving to an apartment with a second bedroom within a year. I don't want to donate a bunch of furniture only to have to go and buy it all again in a year. Instead I have decided to get rid of anything that is falling apart, third or fourth-hand IKEA, or that we don't actually like. This is a huge departure from the early-twenties inclination to grab whatever was cheapest (i.e. the coffee table we found in the alley).

The reward for all this hard work? Hopefully, a place that looks a little more like this:

And less like this:

Haha, just kidding. That was our apartment at the very worst-of-the-worst tip of moving day. Ah, memories.
